Non-experimental research is research that lacks the manipulation of an independent variable, random assignment of participants to conditions or orders of conditions, or both. In most of the cases, non-experimental methods reduce to instrumental variable estimation and sample selection models (also known as Heckman models). These regression approaches take account of selection bias, whereas simple regression models such as ordinary least squares (OLS), generally do not.
